Sometimes I wish for pastures full of orchard grass and timothy. I can’t help it, I grew up in New England. Truly though, there are times I think we should plow up and reseed our pastures. I don’t know how many types of grass there are growing on this farm.
Today I was looking and thinking about all the types of grass there are. Yes, some orchard grass and timothy; Bermuda, foxtail, fescue, crab grass(one of the livestock’s favorite). prairie grass…..Each one grows best at a different part of the growing season. Some do well in dry times. All seem to love this year’s hot wet weather.
Without this variety we could be without pasture. A dry spell, heat wave, too much cold or wet could wipe out a pasture of just one or two varieties.
Yep. I am grateful for our grass varieties! Nature knows best.
