A Thursday off this week. With Monday being a holiday Tuesday(my regular day off) would be busy, so I was scheduled to work and got a rare Thursday off. So far the weather has let me get a bunch done outside, even hung out some clothes!
I was hoping to awaken to the sound of rain but none has come in yet. We need it. After a very moist summer we are now very dry. Mowing the lawn has been less frequent and then only spot mowed. The heat came back and it’s been in the 90s and breezy again. It can’t last much longer though. the days are getting a lot shorter and even in the heat I can sense Autumn in the atmosphere.
But for the most part the pastures look great! Taller than a German Shepherd (Max) in many areas.
Wildflowers are few and farther between this time of year. I did find one beauty though. Garden mums are getting ready to bloom for a second time and don’t seem to be minding the dryness or even all the dust from the gravel road we live on.
Next year I AM going to have a vegetable garden. We’ve been 2 summers without one since we moved to this farm. I did planted some cucumbers and zucchini in tubs. Took forever to get a zucchini seed to grow. Replanted seeds 3 x. But now I have 1 large, lovely plant and hopefully will have a zucchini to cook soon. The cucumbers, on the other hand, grew well. We got 3 beautiful cukes off them. But then the aphids got hungry!
Over the Labor Day weekend we labored! Not that I mind at all. I don’t know what I would do without farm work to do. Well, I can think of somethings but do LOVE working on the farm.
We bought 100 bales of nice, tall variety Bermuda grass hay out of the field. $3 a bale! While we have been buying some alfalfa square bales to keep in the barn since moving here we have not until now found nice and affordable grass square bales to buy. It’s nice to have the small bales when for when just a bale or two is needed. Big rounds are great and easy to feed but a bear to get just a small amount off of.
I do miss our 45 acres of alfalfa/timothy/orchard grass we had in NW Missouri. We always baled some nice square bales then had the rest round baled. We just don’t have as much land here to have room for a hay field.
Time to go get some more done around here. Have a great day!
