I assume it’s been the hot wet weather we have had that has the biting flies population soaring also. Not so much horse flies, but the house fly looking monsters that bite. They’ve been driving the cattle and horses crazy.
The cattle have spent the last week in the east pasture where there is no pond to give them relief from heat and flies. They have made it clear to me they want out of there. So tonight they got to go back to the front pasture and pond pasture. I have never seen our cattle so glad to get into the pond where the flies can’t get them and the water cools them.
Luckily the pond is still at a high level from all the rain we’ve had this summer. Seen in some of the photos is the brown grass where the water level had gotten up to, and the grass growing out of the water which is the normal level. We don’t like giving the cattle free access to the pond all the time because of the mucking up of it they do, but with temperatures as high as we are having I feel blessed to have the ponds for the cattle to cool off in and get some relief from the flies.
